The BioXXI Story – A Family Business with a Big Vision

Talking about the Bio XXI product range is the same as talking about Coronilla S.A. and its family values of Community Effort, Family Centricity, Hard Work, Tenacity, and Commitment to the Environment we all live, while also adhering to ancient Bolivian Andean farming traditions.

Coronilla was established in 1972 in Cochabamba, Bolivia, by the self-made industrialist Guillermo Wille of German-Bolivian origin as a noodle factory and is now run by the 3rd generation Willes.

In 1997, when Martha Wille took the reins, she not only focused on her passion for eco-social values but she went on a quest to change the company from “just a noodle factory” to a leader in Organic, Gluten-Free, Vegan, and non-GMO environmentally sustainable farming and food production. She did this by challenging modern pasta-making processes, changing all noodle recipes to be based on Andean cereals such as Quinoa, Amaranth, Rice, and adjusting the whole company to comply with all Fair Trade Policies, making it a model based on four core principles; Environment Protection, Social Development, Economic Feasibility, and total Transparency. The success of her drive and vision has resulted in a multitude of local and international awards. With her goals reached, she handed over the General Manager role to her son, Diego Wille, who, together with his sisters, now runs the company.

Coronilla’s products are sold worldwide, in over 12 countries, either as private labels or under the BIO XXI brand, Coronilla’s own brand borne in 2016. To read more about Coronilla, click here.

Bio XXI in South Africa since 2019

Bio XXI’s story in South Africa started in 2018 when Per Ostberg (the CEO of Bio XXI South Africa) found out he was gluten intolerant. In his search for a great-tasting gluten-free alternative, he met Diego Pelaez at the Business School they both studied at. The rest is as we say history. So whether you are gluten intolerant, vegan, concerned about GMOs in your food, or just want to eat healthier, we know how you feel and how frustrating it can be to find great-tasting products.

Since 2019, we are importing and distributing the Bio XXI products to South Africa, and we are continuing Coronilla’s core family values in our daily business.
